UK Recycle IT
WEEE UK Recycle IT was set up in December 2002 by Remade South East (funded by Kent County Council) to test the market for redundant IT equipment. The objective of this work was to demonstrate that markets existed in the South East for WEEE and that sustainable business solutions could be found for complex IT waste issues.
The project recycles equipment through either data wiping and refurbishment or disassembly into the component parts.

UK Recycle IT was initially established as a social enterprise project, training 65 people via the New Deal scheme, 11 of whom have gone onto full time employment. In previous years the project has had a relatively low turnover of equipment averaging around 100 tonnes of WEEE recycled per annum.
Although the project has been successful as a training and research project, it was failing to break even financially, and partnership was sought from the private sector to provide commercial management experience. A partnership was formed between Remade and MDJ Light Bros Ltd of Lewes. WEEE

The partnership aims are to:

a) Help develop UK Recycle IT markets
b) Provide Technically Competent Management and material management expertise
c) Merge the benefits associated with social enterprise and larger scale commercial development.

Since the inception of the project, the Hazardous Waste Directive has been introduced which has imposed disposal restrictions on business. Whilst this potentially opened up new markets for the project, the Directive also required a high degree of regulatory compliance for which the project was not fully equipped. The expertise provided by MDJ Light Brothers assisted in setting up a regulatory compliant system.

Since the partnership has been operating, over 170 tonnes of CRT Hazardous wastes and WEEE have been diverted from landfill and 5 permanent staff have been taken on from the original New Deal Scheme.

The partnership has enabled the facility to expand its commercial base to accept a greater range of WEEE, including televisions and other non IT office related equipment, within the existing infrastructure. CRT splitting is an additional service provided by Light Brothers at their Lewes facility. The partnership has demonstrated a number of ways in which it has gone beyond the contractual minimums. MDJ Light Brothers has provided

a) Full time management presence
b) Equipment (forklift, pallet scales, transport and cages)
c) Direct access to a local hazardous waste reprocessing

Remade has provided

a) Extensive workshop and office space, staffing and waste management licensing
b) Access to local business support organisations
c) Support and expertise on the management of volunteer labour

The partnership has focused on the provision of training to people with disabilities and those who are long-term unemployed. The facility also assists these individuals to gain external IT qualifications such as Microsoft A plus. The partnership is growing from strength to strength and the objectives of the project have been met by creating a traceable route for local reprocessing and securing long-term financial viability whilst retaining the social enterprise benefits of the original project.
