Remade South East

The aim of the company is to expand upon the successful waste market development activities carried out by Remade South East across the whole of the South East of England. The Programme will create and sustain new markets for waste resources in order to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and to minimise C02 emissions through the re-use and recycling of materials.

Economic regeneration in the South East will be supported through a series of projects designed to encourage inward investment and to help companies diversify into recycling and to exploit supply chain opportunities. The waste and environment sector is undergoing rapid growth and is at the forefront of innovation in technology in the UK. Remade South East is a demand-led project which enjoys a high level of support from a range of influential stakeholders who share the vision for the potential for best practice in environmental protection and economic transformation in the South East.

The main areas of activity for Remade South East are:

  • Developing understanding of opportunities
  • Identifying linkages and facilitating partnerships
  • Project feasibility and commercial viability studies
  • Championing projects and ideas
  • Overcoming common obstacles

Remade South East is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and has a Constitution and a Board of Directors made up of representatives from the public and private sectors from across the South East region.

The need for regional waste market development

The need for a market development programme operating across the whole of the South East region is becoming urgent due to the reduction in landfill space and the requirements for local authorities to meet statutory targets. By 2010 the amount to recyclable waste being generated by households will increase four-fold. The commercial and industrial sectors are also under increased financial and legislative pressure resulting in larger volumes of material requiring end-markets. The development of new markets and the establishment of greater reprocessing capacity are essential to meet the huge challenge from waste facing the South East. At a time when the environmental technology sector is growing, the resultant benefits from investment and job creation will be important to the economic development of the area.

There is a strong demand amongst potential partners for the delivery of local projects in addition to meeting regional needs for waste supply and reprocessing. On the ground project delivery will complement the work of regional strategic bodies and help to implement programmes to achieve waste strategies.

Aims of Remade South East

Remade South East aims to become a regional organisation which will work closely with SEEDA, GOSE, County Councils, Business Support Agencies and sub-regional delivery organisations , (such as the six Sustainable Business Partnerships) to deliver waste initiatives of a regional nature that provide benefits to all areas. In addition to regional projects, where funding is provided by specific local areas or Counties, tailor-made projects will be delivered specifically to those partners with a view to disseminating the best practice gained to the larger regional partnership.

Remade South East will work with sub-regional organisations to deliver on-the-ground waste market development projects. The new organisation will bid for funds, manage central functions and cover projects that go beyond one specific sub-region such as product research, construction projects, sustainability initiatives for ports, resource efficiency in tourist areas and waste reprocessing for the whole region e.g. plastics.

Benefits for regional partners include development of future reprocessing infrastructure, encouragement of inward investment and improvement of skills base for businesses. Local Authorities will obtain assistance in meeting Biodegradable Municipal Waste targets through composting initiatives as well as support for recycling schemes of bulky waste and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

Joint working on waste promotional campaigns for green procurement activities will improve the environmental performance of Councils. Businesses can access support for the development of improved business recycling facilities and can gain opportunities to promote green products and services through events such as Green Trade Fairs. All sectors will benefit from the overall reduction of waste going to landfill.
